Esperanza Rising: 3rd Grade Language Arts

My goal as a teacher is to help each of my students reach their fullest potential and to instill in them a love for learning. As a Language Arts teacher and avid lover of reading, one of the most important objectives for me is to teach each student to love reading and to realize that reading isn’t a chore; it is fun and entertaining. I want to give them a life-long love for books by introducing new and exciting novels that we will read at a very in-depth level.

The first book we will be reading as a class is “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This is a wonderful novel about a Mexican girl, Esperanza, and her family’s struggle as they move to America. Although the book is in English, it will also introduce them to elements of Mexican culture and a vocabulary word here-and-there, so it will be a fun way to connect English language learning to our Spanish class. I want to start reading this book as soon as everyone has their own copy, so I am asking parents to please purchase the book for their child. You can find it on Amazon, used or new, or at most book stores.
